About Tennis Tales

Tennis Tales is a collection of essays and reflections on tennis, community, competition, and the people and experiences I encounter through the game.

Some stories begin with a match. Others begin with a conversation, a teammate, an opponent, a neighborhood court, or something that happens between points and matches. Together, they explore the ways a game can reveal much larger stories about community, competition, friendship, identity, and everyday life.

THE WRITER

Lia Roots

I came to tennis relatively late, first as a recreational player and eventually as a devoted student of the game. Somewhere along the way, I discovered something I hadn’t expected: tennis is full of stories.

As a behavioral scientist, I have always been fascinated by human behavior—how people make decisions, interact with one another, and respond to the communities around them. My training as a researcher has taught me to observe closely, ask questions, look for patterns, and reflect on what those observations might reveal about the world we share.

Tennis Tales grew out of the people, places, conversations, mishaps, rivalries, friendships, and unexpected moments I encounter on and around the court. These essays are about tennis, but they are also about the communities we find through the game—and the larger stories about people and everyday life that unfold between the points.
